SELECTED PROJECTS

As part of EU projects such as ARROWHEAD, EMC² and CARONTE, AIT is conducting research with its partners in various fields such as intercon- nected industrial systems, automotive, railway and road transport. One result is the „Failure Mode, Vulnerabilities and Effect Analysis“ (FMVEA), a method for the combined analysis of the effects of errors and attacks on the security and reliability of cyber-physical systems.

MoMuT is a tool for the automated creation of software tests that was developed by AIT in coope- ration with the Graz University of Technology. The core technology is the mutation-based test case generation which allows the created tests to find certain errors with certainty. MoMuT is available for various modelling languages in the industrial context and is already used in several EU projects (e.g. Enable-S3, EMBEET, AutoDrive).

AIT has developed the HARMONIA project (Hard- ware Monitoring for Automotive Applications) to- gether with Infineon Technologies and the Vienna University of Technology. In this project, AIT tech- nology analyzes and evaluates cyber-physical sys- tems in the automotive industry according to qua- litative („correctness“) and quantitative („robust- ness“) criteria. One application area is in this case the automatic monitoring of automotive designs. Testing time and costs in the design process are thus to be reduced.

OUR APPROACH

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) consist of physical objects that are inter- connected via ICT systems and communicate with one another through software. Today, these systems already play a significant role in our dai- ly lives, for example, in the form of driver assistance systems for highly automated vehicles, intelligent energy networks or telemedicine for in- creasing the quality of life. In the near future, such integrated systems will form the basis for solving major societal challenges – possible ap- plications include intelligent traffic systems, Smart Grids, modern health care (e-Health), environmental management, public safety, the handling of natural disasters and globally competitive industrial pro- duction facilities, („Industry 4.0“).

PROTECTION FOR PEOPLE AND SOCIETY

The security and reliability of CPS are of the utmost importance for the protection of people and society. It is not sufficient for CPS to just pro- tect the environment against the non-functioning of the system (“safe- ty“). As open and networked systems, CPS are the target of cyber at- tacks that can lead to an impairment of the safety of the CPS. For this reason, „safety“ can not be considered in isolation from „security“, the protection of the system from malicious players in its environment. The AIT tool FMVEA helps to develop a system in such a way that it is both „safe“ and „secure“.


The high complexity of CPS, the hard real-time requirements and the time to market pressure can very easily have a negative impact on the quality of the developed systems. To prevent this, AIT provides tools for runtime verification (monitoring) and test case generation technologies for the efficient verification of CPS. In addition, AIT is actively contribut- ing its knowledge to the creation of future security standards.


RELIABLE SYSTEMS TOMORROW TODAY

The great age of the CPS has only just begun. Developments such as the „Internet of Things“ (IoT), car-to-X communication, autonomous driving, intelligent production and self-learning systems require contin- uous work on existing and new strategies, methods and instruments for the development of reliable systems.


AIT is well prepared for this future: Together with IST-Austria, the Vien- na University of Technology and TTTech, it is involved in the construc- tion of an IoT infrastructure in Vienna and has made a name for itself last year as a co-organizer of the CPS week, the international top con- ference on the subject of CPS with more than 900 participants.
