MOBILITY

Automated driving changes the automotive industry and redefines mobility behaviour and infrastructure requirements. AIT sensor technology is an important key to this.

PROJECTS

EVALUATION TEST REGION UPPER AUSTRIA NORTH

The aim of the „DigiTrans“ project is to set up and operate a test environment consisting of a research, development and evaluation structure for automated driving in Austria.


The test region Austria-North (focus on Upper Aus- tria including adjacent regions) for automated dri- ving with the inclusion of digitization and logistics aspects was initiated as part of the „Initiative Con- nected Mobility“ of the automotive cluster Upper Austria and jointly developed by the project partners Automobile Cluster Upper Austria, AIT, Logistikum FH Steyr and IESTA and filed in the FFG-Call for probing test environments.

OUR APPROACH

The vision is within reach: To a much larger degree than today, the car will become a networked and rolling computer in the future. In addition to the established car producers and their system suppliers, dozens of new players will rush onto the field to also equip this computer with in- telligence and software.


EXPANDING SHARING MODELS

Owning a vehicle does no longer need to be a household top priority. Rather, people will buy mobility as a service: The robot chauffeur will be ordered exactly to the minute via an app on the smartphone or with the touch of the finger on the home technology screen. As a result, boundaries between motorized individual traffic and public transport will dissolve. The connection mobility for the public passenger trans- port will change greatly. Overall, this may lead to significantly greater access to mobility for all age groups and social strata – worldwide. There will be upheavals in the economy as well.


INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Technol- ogy (bmvit) published the national „Automated Driving“ action plan („Automated Network-Connected – Mobile“) in June 2016. The AIT recommendations were: together with industry, promote and demand defined use cases, with first application cases and interdisciplinary R & D projects which concern both local transport and individual mobility. Furthermore, enable test and trial environments, i.e. data acquisition in the „real world“, while also using the existing strengths of the science and technology location Austria in a targeted manner.


In the autumn of 2016, the bmvit set down the testing environments for automated driving in Austria, as announced in the action plan. The first projects were launched in 2017. The AIT has developed a test roadmap in close coordination with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). A num- ber of projects and probes are being carried out based on this roadmap.


REDEFINING VEHICLE COMMUNICATION

AIT is also successfully conducting research into new approaches in sensor technology, the interconnection of vehicles (among themselves and with the infrastructure) including C2X communication, the design and the testing procedures for safety-critical autonomous systems, in- cluding approval procedures. The activities will be implemented in re- search projects of different domains (aviation, rail, automotive, special, construction and agricultural machines, etc.). The resulting potential technology transfer between application domains will increase the speed of development and reduces costs.
